Open 24 hours to the public

Gillman Barracks' public art showcase, LOCK ROUTE, opens officially during Art After Dark on Friday 13 January 2017. Curated by Khairuddin Hori, LOCK ROUTE takes inspiration from Gillman Barracks’ address and the 24km long route march common in the training of ‘graduating’ army recruits in Singapore, harking back to Gillman Barracks’ history of being a former military barracks.

LOCK ROUTE features 16 arresting outdoor artworks by 15 world-renowned and emerging international and Singapore artists, including several new commissions. The artworks consist of site-specific installations, sculptures and murals, and visitors are invited to traverse the grounds of Gillman Barracks and experience a closer encounter with art out in the open.

Notable artworks include a mural ‘Land of Shadows’ by Los Angeles-based artist Cleon Peterson and the sculpture ‘Constellation of One’ by Kirsten Berg, a contributing artist of the Burning Man Festival. During the launch on 13 Jan, home-grown multidisciplinary collective The Kaizen M.D. will be presenting a live performance at Australian-French artist Mel O'Callaghan’s interactive installation ‘Parade’ (7.30 to 10.30PM), and Indonesian artist collective indieguerillas will be working with We Need a Hero male grooming salon for an interactive experience at barbershop installation ‘Goyang Cukur’ (6 to 10PM).

The 15 artists from 9 countries featured in LOCK ROUTE are Cleon Peterson (USA); Kirsten Berg (USA); Tianzhuo Chen (China); Zheng Lu (China); Mel O'Callaghan (Australia/France); Benedetto Bufalino (France); Entang Wiharso (Indonesia); indieguerillas (Indonesia); Oanh Phi Phi (Vietnam); Maitree Siriboon (Thailand); Shahrul Jamili Miskon (Malaysia); and Acit Salbini, Gerald Leow, Sheryo+Yok and Stephanie Jane Burt from Singapore.

A panel discussion with the curator and selected artists of LOCK ROUTE will be held on Thursday 12 January 2017 from 7 to 8.30pm, where artists will share firsthand on their artistic practice and process behind the LOCK ROUTE artworks.
