I wanted something with a pressure sensor. I like to lift heavy things at the gym and have a tendency to strong arm everything, including brushing my teeth which apparently may have contributed to some gum erosion. The current top model Sonicare (DiamondClean Platinum) does not have a pressure sensor. However, the FlexCare Platinum Connected does come with a pressure sensor. Oral-B models from the 1000 up have a pressure sensor. Based on price, I elected to compare the Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected to the current top model Oral-B, Genius Pro 8000.
First, I asked two friends who are dentists what they prefer. One friend strongly recommended the Sonicare FlexCare+, stating that the top of the line models are not any better. The other provided a similar recommendation to my dentist - either one will be a huge improvement over a manual brush. So slight tilt to the Sonicare at this point. Very slight because not much detail was provided as to why the Sonicare was better. Just a "trust me, get this" endorsement.
Next I searched for any studies comparing rotary (Oral-B) to oscillating (Sonicare) power brush heads. I won't post links to all the scientific studies I read, but the are quite a few on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) site. The more recent ones favor rotary brush heads.
Point Oral-B.
Then I compared features -
Pressure Sensor: Oral-B has visible and tactile feedback (flashes light and pulses motor). Sonicare only provides tactile feedback (vibrates handle).
Strokes/movements per minute: Oral-B (48,800 movements/min), Sonicare (31,000 strokes/min, 62,000 movements/min)
Connected App: Both have some form of app that helps you hit all areas of your mouth consistently
Brush Heads: Oral-B has 5 available brush heads and comes with three (cross action, whitening, and sensitive brush heads), Sonicare has 5 available brush heads and comes with two (AdaptiveClean, InterCare)
Battery Life: Sonicare claims up to 2 weeks, Oral-B claims up to 12 days
Point Oral-B.
I then looked up subjective factors. In particular, I was interested in comparing noise levels. I looked up videos on Youtube, and there's no question that the Sonicare has a more pleasant buzzing sound vs. the more mechanical sound of the Oral-B.
Point Sonicare.
I considered travel convenience since I am on the move a lot. Both come with travel cases. Oral-B is a nicer looking black case. The Oral-B is made by Braun, and the travel charger uses the same kind of plug as my Braun Series 9.
Point Oral-B.
Finally, cost. Oral-B is cheaper up front by about $50 including all applicable discounts and manufacturer coupons at present. The Oral-B brush heads are also cheaper.
Point Oral-B.
So, I bought the Oral-B. I have used the app, and while it has some annoyances, the ability to track my toothbrushing habits is cool. I am a tech nerd after all. Reminders for flossing and mouthwash are on by default, but you can disable them. A suction mount to hold your phone on your bathroom mirror is included. I also like that you can setup the app to automatically order replacement brush heads through Amazon when the one you're using at the end of its life. I found the overall noise to be more than tolerable, but there's also usually music playing in my home no matter the hour.
Of course, the big question is, how well does it clean teeth? Very well apparently! My teeth were noticeably whiter after 1 week using only the standard cross action head. I will likely try the whitening head at some point in accordance with the whitening program in the app. The brush head has visible movement, in contrast with the Sonicare which has more movements, but they are smaller movements, and only linear movements.
I'm very pleased with my purchase. Unless you're averse to the sound the Oral-B makes, it's handily the best brush on the market right now.
This one has lithium-ion battery and good programs for different kinds of cleaning and a clear menu for selecting them. Good product, cleans well.
I have been a Phillips Sonicare user for years. Been happy with it, because it was the first real electric toothbrush I ever had. The battery has been failing for the past 2 years and I have pushed it along as long as I could, but now I am lucky if the charge lasts long enough for one brushing. So I have been looking to replace it for a while. A few times I almost got another Sonic care but decided to read up on the Oral-B. I was happy to see and sort of surprised its the only brush approved by the ADA. When I saw that I read reviews of what people think, and most of the reviews are very positive. Some people complain its too harsh, but I think its perfect. I was always skeptical of the round head, I thought the style of the Sonic care would clean better, but with the design of the brush heads and using it one day, I can see how this can clean better.
When I was looking for an Oral B. I saw this one had 6 different speeds, I thought about getting the 3000 series or the 5000 series but I admit the position detection intrigued me. So with the 6 different modes and position detection I thought I would buy this one.
First, the cleanliness of my teeth. AMAZING.
This brush does an amazing job cleaning my teeth. I have tried a few modes on the brush and do not find any too harsh for me. Coming from a Sonic care I think the feel of the brush while your brushing your teeth is actually better. The roundness of the head, allows you to easily change the position to clean your teeth very well.
I have tried the normal speed, the deep clean speed, the whitening speed, tongue cleaner.
Normal speed is great
Deep clean is great as well, not too harsh on me.
Teeth Whitening... This one really surprised me. I thought it may just slow the head down some or change the pattern of the movement some, but it starts off the speed slow, then gradually speeds up to the highest speed for this mode, then goes back to the slow speed and alternates the speed the entire time you brush... I can see how this may really be helpful as it alternates the speed while brushing.
Position detection,
A little disappointed in this. I like it, I like how it ha 2 more sections that it helps you brush with. Each section when your brushing the color will go from dark blue to lighter blue and then from lighter blue to white.
Yes I need to read the instructions, is this to have you do the outside and top on first pass and then inside and top in 2nd pass? If so the think the position sensing can be a little better. There are some times I am brushing the right side off my mouth and it things I am doing the left side. It will get better over time I think. Is this a little gimmicky, yes. I think that if the brush did not depend on your phone to use your camera and the brush had position sensing sensors on the inside of the brush this would be a true position sensing brush. But it does not appear it does? If it does not, then whats the difference between this brush and the other bluetooth brushes. Why does only the 8000 offer this feature.
The pluses of the position sensor, is it helps make sure you clean all parts of your teeth, and makes sure you brush long enough... Without sensing the time defaults to 2 minutes with it defaults to 3 minutes. I think its a fun way to clean your teeth and makes me look forward to brushing. I don't always brush my teeth every day. I am bad, and days I do, its usually only once. But I think this will help get me back in the habit of brushing my heath twice or more on a daily basis..
Pressure sensor works really well. I like how it changes color to let you know if your putting too much pressure on your teeth..
Now as for timer... Another way I think the Oral-B is better than Sonic Care. Atleast the model I have.... When you turn on your brush, it alerts you to change position every 3 seconds.. Great... But then after 2 minutes it shuts off... Sometimes I want to brush a little longer because I want to give extra attention to a specific part of my teeth. But once the 2 minutes is up, it shuts off.
With the Oral-B after the time, it gives an alert letting you know clearly the time is up, but then it continues to work so you can brush longer if you want to.
So my first impression, best brush ever.. I will use it for a while and then update my review.
So in general, I think the Oral-B is a great toothbrush. The cheaper ones, probably work just as well as this one, but then this one gives different modes which I think can be beneficial to me. So if your looking for a new toothbrush, and considering between a Sonic Care and Oral-B. I highly recommend Oral-B toothbrushes...
Top reviews from other countries
As it is with each new model, the battery life last longer than the past ones, but the brushing still feels the same. Oral-B is trying hard to bring new techs into the toothbrushing world, but in the end, it's still kind of useless. I'm talking about 6 brushing modes, camera brushing, etc.
Some useful techs are the pressure sensor, which light up red when you are brushing too hard on you teeth & gums, the timer which vibrate each time to tell you to switch quadrant + long vibration when the 2 minutes is up to prevent over-brushing and the log that you sync with yours smartphones to get some useful stats
All the techs that I like are on the 1000 model, except the bluetooth synching, but this one got twice the battery life + more oscillation/rotation/pulsation (although I'm not sure most would feel the difference).
My oldest toothbrush (3-4 years of use) still got ~10 days of battery life from the initial 14 which is great considering the lithium battery tech we had back then. The 2 others still hold their 14 days charge (2 years old + 1 year old)
Pros
+ Quality brushing
+ Nice techs
+ Great battery life (14 days)
+ long term investment
+ Good for couple. You get multiple heads for the toothbrush, so you can have you own head, and share the toothbrush.
+ Nice travel case
Cons
- Quite pricy, considering the small benefits from the 8000 over the cheaper Oral-B toothbrushes
- Some techs are useless
I'd recommend this toothbrush to anyone looking for a long term investment and professionnal brushing experience
